Now that Halloween has passed and Thanksgiving is on the near-term horizon, the holiday shopping season is kicking in. Almost as soon as the trick-or-treating ended the Black Friday ads starting pouring into my email box. This season some of the major retailers are announcing their Black Friday deals early even though they won’t be available for purchase until Thanksgiving.

There’s a general feeling that WiFi is less secure than having a wired connection to the network. It could just be our perception that a signal travelling through air is easier to intercept than one moving across a physical Ethernet cable. When a new WiFi vulnerability is uncovered such as the one in WPA2 which Belgian researchers recently made public, it gets a lot of attention.

Over the past few months, Verizon has launched a series of television ads in which the main character utters the line, “Right plan, wrong network.” The actor saying the line is talking to another character who is clearly having an unhappy experience with his/her cellular connection. NRF Retail’s the BIG Show

The data is still coming in, but it’s looking like consumer spending this holiday season will once again outperform previous years. Multiple research firms including the National Retail Federation (NRF) are predicting a growth in sales over the same period in 2015. Credit card vendor Mastercard is forecasting a 19% increase in online sales over the holidays.

As I was driving home the other day one of my children spotted a house with old Halloween decorations on it. With the holidays coming, it’s a good reminder of the potential impact they can have on an organization. Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the weekend in between kick off the unofficial holiday shopping season which goes until the end of the year.

Getting a discount on something you’ve purchase is always a little exciting. We all like to feel like we’re getting a bargain and saving money. After all, who doesn’t need some extra cash? Budgets always seem to be tight.

This is especially true for schools and libraries. Funding is frequently limited and in tough fiscal times state and local governments need to make cuts with education often feeling the brunt.

It’s summertime, so that means Black Friday is only four months away. Some retailers like to get a head start on the event and offer special Black Friday deals during July as a means to generate some additional sales over the summer. There are also “Christmas in July” promotions. Most of us, however, will wait to make our purchases until the traditional start of the holiday shopping season in November.
